Being a global citizen scholar can mean a multitude of things. It can mean curiosity about the world on an international, national or local level, it could mean a being passionate about learning new subjects, or it could mean learning about how someone can make a difference in the lives of others. In all of these facets of being a Global Citizen Scholar there is a commonality, a desire to know more and do something with that knowledge. By having a continuous desire for learning we can continue to grow as people and be educated members of society. When this year started, my life was changing in more ways that I could imagine. I was moving out of my parent’s house, going to college and I was surrounded by people I didn't know. College is a completely different experience than high school and I didn’t know entirely what to expect, being a part of the honor program though helped me to find where I fit in. We were introduced to the idea of being a Global Citizen Scholar in Gateway to University honors, and I interpreted it quite literally. I was intimidated by the idea “global”, but now the idea excites me. Over the course of this year I was able to be a Global Citizen Scholar, more than I thought I would be able to as a first year. I was able to get involved in the community by volunteering at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in the satellite campus at College Hill in the Speech Pathology Department and second semester I led a group of Girl Scouts with a couple of other girls. These were both incredible experiences, but the one that impacted me the most was the opportunity to study abroad in Austria. I stepped out of my comfort zone, traveled to a German-speaking country to study something I am passionate about, music, and I had to be an independent adult. I had never been out of the country before this trip, I had little knowledge of how other countries functioned and had no expectation of what I was going to be experiencing. Throughout the trip I was engrossed in learning more about the country and the culture, each new day posed an endless opportunity for knowledge. This year has inspired me to continue stepping out of my comfort zone to better understand other people. For me it is easy to want to help other people, but it can sometimes be hard to stop and understand their perspectives and lifestyle. I want to expand my horizons and open myself more so that I become a Global Citizen Scholar.
