Honors Experiences are an important part of the University Honors program at the University of Cincinnati. The experiences are intended to expand our horizons and are intended to be utilized as a medium for personal growth. Each one consists of a growth experience and a reflection on what we learned from it. Every experience is interpreted differently by different individuals and are a resource the university provides students for personal development.
Social Entrepreneurship
Spring 2020
This seminar was originally a study abroad and was adjusted due to the pandemic to be a virtual study abroad. The focus on the class was to work with students both in the US and Colombia to create a self sustaining social entrepreneurship that would address an issue being faced by people in Colombia. My team created a proposal for Oppor2nity Hiring, a company that would provide training and connect people with jobs in the hospitality industry to help people overcome poverty.
This honors seminar focused on the development of student writing in the context of genre analysis and research. Throughout the class we studied a variety of genres and authors. By looking at both what they had to say on the topic of genre and the different writing elements they employed, we were able to improve our own writing.
Greatest Product Failures is an honors seminar focused on, as the title implies, some of the failed products in marketing history. The class focused on the products themselves, why they failed and how the company recovered its losses. We also learned applicable marketing techniques that could be applied to future careers or just life in general.
As an Honors Peer Leader, I was given the opportunity to mentor a section of the Gateway to Honors class at UC. I partnered with Honors Advisor Bria Howard. to share what it means to be a part of the Honors Program, explaining all of the requirements, as well as the benefits of the program. I also mentored students outside of the classroom, sharing my personal experiences and assisting students to transition into life at UC.
Chrysalis is a weekend long retreat designed to help high school students grow in their relationship with God. Over the course of the girl's weekend, there are 15 talks that can help the girls grow in their faith and grow as people. It is intended as an opportunity for reflection about one's life and whether or not it is being lived the way each girl wants it to be.
Exploring leadership was a classed based on examining the leadership styles of influential people throughout history. We had two books that we read, then discussed in class. During the class, we would have group discussions about how we interpreted each leader’s methods, what we thought of those methods and how we could use that in our own lives. We then had a chance to put our knowledge into practice through involvement of an organization of our choice outside of class. Throughout the experience we examined other people’s lives as well as our own, thinking critically about how our actions and leadership style shaped the world around us.
