Exploring Leadership
Looking back at this experience, I gained so much more than historical knowledge of social movements, or even of how to apply leadership methods in my own life, I was pushed outside of my comfort zone in a way that makes me want to stay there. The class was mostly based on having intelligent discussions as a class, we sat in a circle and we all gave our opinions. I am typically a very reserved person, I do not like speaking in front of groups but to be a part of this class that was a necessity. It took some time for me to take a risk and put myself out there but once I did I gained a lot from the class. I was in a supportive environment where I felt equal to my peers and comfortable with being seen, so this class was a influential for me on an educational level and a personal level.
Over the course of the class we were also required to get involved in an organization on a weekly basis outside of class. For my involvement I volunteered at Cincinnati Children's hospital in the speech pathology department. My responsibilities were to assist the speech language pathologists with anything they needed including cleaning and making materials for them to use with the patients. I learned about the work the department was doing and they change they are making in people's lives.
Below is a reflection of my time at the hospital and how it relates to leadership.
